Likas Lagoon

One of the most easily accessible and popular spot to see the waterbirds is the Likas lagoon—a mere 3 kilometres away from Kota Kinabalu.

Despite being within close proximity to the busy Coastal Highway, this shallow lagoon offers a good habitat for species such as Wandering Whistling-ducks, the shy Cinnamon Bittern, Shrenck’s Bittern, White-browed Crake and the Purple Heron.

Dozens of egrets can also be seen here. According to a local birding expert, the number of Pacific Reef Egrets around Kota Kinabalu has increased greatly in recent years.

Getting There

The Likas Lagoon area is reachable by a taxi or via minibuses playing along the Coastal Highway to Inanam.
